You wouldn’t know from watching the trailer, but Steven Soderburgh’s new movie Unsane was shot entirely on an iPhone.

The film centers around a woman, played by Claire Foy of The Crown fame, who is desperate to get away from the unwanted advances of a persistent stalker. After the failure of a restraining order, she relocates to a new city. But she still believes she is seeing her stalker. When she seeks help from the authorities, she mistakenly commits herself to an institution, causing her to question whether she’s right, or they’re right.

Is she the one who’s really insane?

Soderburgh tremendously enjoyed the experience of filming only on iPhones:

I look at this as potentially one of the most liberating experiences that I’ve ever had as a filmmaker. The gets that I felt moment to moment were so significant that this is, to me, a new chapter.

I think this is the future. Anybody going to see this movie who has no idea of the backstory to the production will have no idea this was shot on the phone. That’s not part of the conceit.

What do you think? Will this new experiment in simplicity work in Soderburgh’s favor? Is this a style that filmmakers will begin to follow in the future?
