Just yesterday, Facebook’s newsroom released a statement saying that one of the social media giant’s major goals for 2016 is to completely replace traditional SMS messaging with Facebook Messenger. Facebook has a plan to become the world’s primary means of communication.

Facebook’s messenger app, already independent of the actual site, has 800 million monthly users and an ever growing base. Over the past year, the social network has improved the app so now users can do things like share their location or send money via the app. In addition, Messenger offers a wide variety of emoji and “stickers” allowing users to express their emotions more precisely than on other messaging services. Facebook is also working with businesses who want to advertise on Messaging.

Here’s Facebook’s Infographic outlining its plan for the future of Messaging:

Will Facebook fundamentally change the way people communicate? That remains to be seen. But, with all of the recent innovations to the platform, it is certain that Facebook Messenger will continue to play an important role in modern communication.
