Social media is typically cast as a tool for kids and teenagers to get into more trouble than they might get into normally, but this past weekend, it was used as an avenue for justice. In a story that helps renew faith in society, an Alabama mother was able to utilize social media to help parent her wayward teenagers.

After dropping her children off at the movie theater, Kyesha Smith Wood was upset to later learn that her daughter and step-daughter were “rude and obnoxious” to a woman who tried to correct their disruptive behavior during the movie. Wood decided she would try to contact the woman.

She posted a message on Facebook describing the situation and offering to pay for the woman’s next movie ticket and theater snacks out of the children’s allowance. “This rude, disrespectful, and awful behavior is unacceptable and they owe you an apology,” Wood wrote. “Please message me if this is you. I apologize profusely for their disrespect.”

Screen Shot 2015-04-01 at 2.08.48 PMWood never really expected the post to really gain any traction, describing it as a “long shot,” but it went viral, and now has over 5,500 shares just a few days later. In fact, it didn’t take long at all to reach the woman in question, Rebecca Boyd, who was touched at how much Wood cared about her children’s actions.

The girls are understandably embarrassed, though suitably chastised, according to their mother.

While this may be a small story in the grand scheme of things, it just goes to show how effective a tool social media can be, and whether it’s viewed as helpful or destructive all depends on how it’s used.
