Remember those big touch screen TVs on your long flights? Thanks to your smartphone – and increased WiFi access in the air – airlines will be removing in-flight entertainment screens from planes.

According to the New York Times, most new planes do not include in-flight entertainment systems, and the technology is becoming obsolete. In addition, screens are decreasing in popularity because passengers are either on the airport’s WiFi on the ground, or or the in-flight WiFi during the flight.

Airlines that discontinue screens plan to place slimmer seat on flights. In addition, the weight loss will make planes more fuel efficient, which could mean cheaper flights. Don’t expect more leg room though – airlines will likely use the extra space freed up by smaller seats to add another row in new planes.

For now, these changes will come to planes that fly only domestic routes – long-haul international flyers can still expect in-flight entertainment.

As smartphones become more popular on planes, airlines will have to provide more for their use. In addition to increased WiFi availability, passengers should expect more and more flights to have charging outlets in each seat. These changes may not come quickly: Airlines are notorious for being slow to adapt.

The rise of the smartphone on the airplane stands as testament to just how important mobile phones are to the modern marketplace. Once an innovation changes one industry, all others will follow suit.

Airlines may be slow, but the smartphone has taken flight.
