For all avid Star Wars fans out there, let it be known that your dreams of having your own personal R2-D2 may not be far off.

New company Piaggio Fast Forward (PFF) has created Gita, a small round mobile robot which is made to carry up to 40 pounds of your personal items such as groceries or your purse. Not only is Gita capable of following its owner via the operator’s wearable device, but its system even allows for it to navigate solo (pun intended).

Its stats are also quite impressive, as documented by ZDNet:

Gita stands 26 inches tall and travels at a maximum speed of 22 mph. It is equipped with several patent-pending technologies. Most notably, two stereo cameras are used for optical detection and mapping via visual SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping).

Additionally, this little guy is able to avoid obstacles and people, steering around tight turns and crowded areas.

Gita’s unusual round shape gives it the ability to move as nimbly as a person would in an urban environment. The wheels can handle cracked city sidewalks and brick surfaces, and they can also be swapped out for different scenarios, such as wider tires for zooming across sand or snow.

It also uses an ultrasonic range finder to detect obstacles and has four fish-eye cameras that provide 360 degree views. Gita self-balances using drive wheels and the linear motion of its own battery to compensate when the robot accelerates. It communicates with users (and anyone who happens to be nearby) in three ways: through a touchscreen interface, sound, and lights.

Although still in a developmental stage, the creators are confident that Gita will become a worldwide phenomenon. They envision a future where people will become more active, preferring to walk instead of drive, where Gita takes care of the baggage  issue. Whether or not this vision becomes reality remains to be seen.

Who knows? Maybe personal robots are closer to fact than fiction than we think.
