If you’re a Facebook user who enjoys their privacy, then Facebook is introducing what you may consider to be another hiccup in your social world.
Launching this week, Facebook’s Timeline is literally a visual record of every post you’ve made since signing up. Ah, memories. But this could also open up potential privacy issues on all of your old content. The good news is that Facebook has built in a few features to make the new interface a bit more manageable. We’ll walk you through it.
According to this CIO.com story on privacy recommendations, the simplest way to be sure that all of old posts are private is to edit privacy settings on past status updates and content.
“One way—the easiest of them all—is to use one of the blanket privacy settings introduced not long ago: “Limit the Audience for past Posts.”
Using this option, content on your timeline that you’ve shared with more than your friends—such as public posts—will automatically change to Friends only. This is the smartest way to ensure that no posts become public, and users can always go back and change the visibility settings on individual posts if they so desire.
Another issue that comes into play with Facebook’s Timeline has to do with posts made by other users on your Wall. Let’s be honest, most of us know at least one or two friends that frequently tag photos, or are in the habit of commenting with… less “tact” than you may prefer. So older posts by friends that appear on your Wall may be something you’d rather not have come back to haunt you. Well, Facebook has also accounted for this with an option in your privacy settings that also allows you to choose who can view the content that other users have posted when it comes to your Timeline.
Lastly, there is also a Timeline option to edit every single past post you’ve made on Facebook. This could be a rather daunting task to someone who has been a long-time user, so it is recommended that you make use of that handy feature — “View Profile As.” This allows you to personally view your profile as other users see it or as it appears publicly. With the “View As” feature, each user can be 100% certain that the privacy of their social world is protected.
