Facebook has revamped its Lists features, with smart lists, as well as Close Friends and Acquaintance lists.  The smart lists automatically update, with Facebook placing your friends in respective groups based upon information in both your profiles.  Friends that went to school with you, for example, are grouped under school, while family members are compiled in another list, and so on.  The Close Friends and Acquaintances lists help you customize your news feed to get the most news from close friends, while only getting major, important updates from acquaintances.

Facebook has also created “Restricted” lists, for people that you’d like to remain friends with, but do not necessarily want seeing everything on your profile, such as your boss.  Another nice feature with the revamping is that previously-created user lists are still valid, so there is no loss of functionality.

One major factor to consider with regard to lists is their privacy.  With all the changes to Facebook,, you want to make sure that you know who can view what you’re posting.  The friends that you have placed in lists won’t be able to see what list they’re in, but they will be able to see what other friends they are grouped with.

There also seems to be a caveat about employers and what they can and cannot see.  If you confirm a coworker relationship within a list, Facebook then asks if you want to confirm your place of business and subsequently adds your employer to your profile.

Facebook’s new and revamped lists allow users to customize who they share information with and who populates their “social world.”  The lists make it easy to share certain things with certain individuals, without changing privacy settings.  This allows for greater control over the content that users post on Facebook, and is something that every user should check out.
