For New Yorkers, the days of rushing to the subway, then wasting precious minutes waiting for the next train to arrive are over. Beginning today, New York City is making use of mobile by offering an iOS train schedule app for travelers.
The Metropolitan Transit Agency on Friday offered up an iOS test app for the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and S shuttle lines. The data will also be on its Web site and in a feed that can be used by other app developer.
The Subway Time app covers seven train lines, with more to be added in 2013, and offers subway times down to the minute by using countdown clocks that are already in place in most subway stations.
According to the MTA, the app can also handle 5,000 requests per second. And considering the fact that over 4.3 million people ride the NYC subway system every single day, that bandwidth will no doubt be put to use.
