As we look at the year in review, it is inevitable that we dredge up some of our most facepalm-worthy moments, and those cringeworthy social media posts that we wish we’d passed on.

Regardless, even if you have had some major social media slip-ups in the past year, they couldn’t have been anymore embarrassing than some of these:

1.  DiGiorno’s #WhyIStayed faux pas

DiGiorno’s Pizza conjured up its smack talking, possibly drunk wise guy tone, and jumped on the #WhyIStayed Hashtag with the tweet: #WhyIStayed  You had pizza.  DiGiorno’s unfortunately missed the part where that particular hashtag was used by survivors of abusive relationships.  The backlash was sudden and swift, which helped DiGiorno’s realize their mistake.  The pizza company apologized and removed the tweet.

2.  Always take into account autocorrect

In March, a social media campaign aimed to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, using the hashtag “#nomakeupselfie.”  People were asked to donate to Cancer Research UK by texting the word “BEAT” to a generic donations number.  What they didn’t consider was that autocorrect might change “BEAT” to “BEARS.”  So, in the end, some generous people tried to donate to cancer research, but instead ended up beginning the adoption process for a polar bear.

3.  Check your links

When a customer complained about a flight delay, US Airways sent a message via twitter, suggesting that she submit her feedback via the link provided.  The only issue was, the link was to a graphic image involving a woman and model airplane.  US Airways apologized and removed the tweet, along with the explanation that the tweet had been posted by another user and flagged as inappropriate.  It was an unlucky accident that it wound up in a response to a customer.

4.  Don’t assume, especially when it comes to weddings

Imagine waking up one morning to see an email congratulating you on your upcoming wedding, and offering you previews of wedding planning tools to help you on your big day.  Many dream it could be so easy, unless they had no marriage planned to begin with.  Well, this is what happened to some of Pinterest’s users.  It turned out that many of the users were still single, and they clarified this on Twitter, along with their surprise over the awkward situation.  Very much to Pinterest’s credit, they apologized for the mistake, with the following witty explanation:

“Every week, we email collections of category-specific pins and boards to pinners we hope will be interested in them. Unfortunately, one of these recent emails suggested that pinners were actually getting married, rather than just potentially interested in wedding-related content. We’re sorry we came off like an overbearing mother who is always asking when you’ll find a nice boy or girl.”

5.  NYPD’s Major Twitter Mishap

In a move that was meant to be a boost to the NYPD’s public image, the official NYPD Twitter account called for other users to tweet photos of themselves with a member of the police force along with the hashtag #myNYPD. Well, instead of tweeting happy pictures of fellowship, Twitter was flooded with pictures of police brutality juxtaposed with facetious messages.  On the positive side, the department did learn what the public thought of them, just not in the way they expected.

6.  Google is your friend, so use it

During the World Cup, Delta Airlines sportingly wanted to congratulate the US on winning their match against Ghana. To do so, they tweeted a photo with the Statue of Liberty to represent the US, and to symbolize Ghana, they used a giraffe.  However, giraffes are not native to Ghana, so Delta ended up apologizing for the photo, then went on to wish good luck to all the teams.

7.  Double check before you retweet

In September, someone tweeted to Donald Trump that their parents who passed away, and added that Trump was always a big inspiration to them.  The user attached a photo, and asked Donald Trump to retweet the message.  Donald Trump obliged, only to later discover that the photo was actually of the notorious serial killers Fred and Rose West.  Trump implied that he might sue, but no news on that.  Yet.

8.  And on the subject of Twitter . . .

Yes, yes, the Superbowl is all about having a good time and hanging out with friends.  Although, if you’ve had a few drinks too many, just stay away from social media for the time being. Especially if you have the account credentials for your company.

If you can think of any other social media blunders that should be on this list, tweet your thoughts to @opusfidelis!
