Facebook has recently launched two new features, fundraiser pages and improved “Donate Now” buttons. The social media giant intends for these developments to aid nonprofits in their efforts to reach a wider donor base and accomplish their missions more effectively.

Fundraiser pages are like Event pages—nonprofits describe their cause, lay out their goal, and directly collect funds from supporters. In addition, Facebook has added a “progress bar” which shows all page visitors how close a given charity is to achieving its goal. To facilitate the giving process, the company has affixed the “Donate Now” button not only to the nonprofit’s home page, but to all of its posts as well.

Such freedom comes with a greater responsibility on the part of charities involved. Facebook requires that all nonprofits who take advantage of its service be certified, have verified bank accounts and Facebook Pages, and comply with Facebook’s Community Operations Standards.

As of now, Facebook offers fundraiser pages free of charge, though the company has stated that this is subject to change starting in 2016 – which is only weeks away – but still worth getting on the bandwagon because the fees will likely be nominal.

With over one billion daily users, Facebook is the largest social network by a long shot. Fundraiser pages offer new opportunities for nonprofits to reach wider audiences and for donors to see the impact of their gifts. Now, through a seamless interaction, charities can collect gifts from supporters, while at the same time, these donors can see if their gifts help accomplish some good.
