Sadly, you can’t just yet. But you can buy the next best thing. Kia announced that the new 2013 Kias will be equipped with Google Maps Navigation, and will even partner with Google to improve its voice-activated UVO (“Your Voice”) navigation system. The car may not drive itself but it will take your calls, plan your routes, and manage your calendar a lot more efficiently. You can read the entire press release here.

The key takeaway here is not that Google is developing a radical new car user interface. Nothing UVO does or is planned to do is particularly impressive for cars these days (having the car send a text message to your phone that it needs new sparkplugs may be an incredible achievement, but its also an achievement that all major brands offer today). The key takeaway is the fact that Google is partnering with a car manufacturer at all. Whether or not this actually leads to a new Google product offering has yet to be seen, but the door is now open, and we’ll be watching intently to see if anything goes through.
