Earlier in the year, a privacy-centered smartphone called the “Blackphone” appeared as a viable option for users concerened about having more control over their data.  Using a custom version of the Android KitKat operating system, the phone would streamline the data from calls, messaging, and internet browsing, cut it down, and improve secure communication.

The biggest issue with the Blackphone is that in order to enforce private communication, the only secure apps would be the default set included on the device.  However, this problem is about to be solved- with the announcement of a “privacy-focused app store”.

Beginning next year, “Silent Space” will be the main feature and come packaged with a whole suite of privacy apps, including Silent-branded apps, the Blackphone store, and third-party apps.

While it’s still very early to try to get a handle on how successful the Blackphone will be, it’s definitely something to keep an eye on if online security and privacy is important to you.
