The media is still awash with information and concern over the 276 Nigerian girls who were abducted last month.  One of the biggest pushes has come from a hashtag on twitter, #BringBackOurGirls.  The explosion of this particular hashtag and the time-sensitive nature of the issue seems to be pressuring the US military into preparing for action.  According to NBC news, an anonymous military official reported that they were “being tweeted into combat.”

Currently, there are over 3.5 million tweets bearing the #BringBackOurGirls tag.  If being able to mobilize troops does’t show the power and influence social media has over our culture, I don’t know what does.
