We’re all tired of Facebook with its timeline manipulation and targeted advertisements. Instagram is great, but limited to photos and short videos. Snapchat is the go-to for Generation Z, but those of us who are older crave something a little more permanent. The time is ripe for a new social media platform.
Vero wants to be that new standard social media platform. They don’t curate or manipulate the content you see, and there is no way for commercial users to “boost” their posts. Free to the first million users, the platform boasts no ads, and consequently, no data mining. Their name, Vero, means truth… but are they too good to be true?
The feedback so far has been mixed. The app seems to be working through a lot of bugs, and did not seem prepared for the huge jump in interactions that it saw this past weekend. As of now, their website currently has a banner with the message, “We are experiencing higher than normal load. We are working to resume normal service as soon as possible.” Additionally, after the first million users sign up, the app will start charging subscription fees.
However, once you can get it to work, the app seems to have a lot to offer. Similar to Instagram, the platform allows you to share photos and videos, but also music, places, links and book recommendations. It is easy to share content to different audiences: you can choose an audience of close friends, friends, acquaintances, or followers for each post.
If they can work out the kinks, Vero has a chance to be the new social platform everyone is looking for. Only time will tell…
