Just over a month ago, Intel made public the long-rumored news concerning the corporation's plans to offer live television through a streaming box service. The idea excited a lot of people, especially since it would mean Intel leaping ahead of Google, Microsoft, and Apple in this particular sphere.
However, Intel revealed that that they have made a deal to sell Intel Media (the branch created for the new TV device) to Verizon. It is unknown how much it was sold for, and the branch location will remain in Santa Clara, where Intel’s HQ is located. Verizon hopes to integrate IP-based TV services with its fiber-optic communications network, FiOS, to help develop next-generation television for an increasingly demanding viewership.
It is speculated that Intel sold the brand to Verizon due to difficulties they had with getting content. It may be the case that some content owners were unwilling to offer Intel use of their programs for fear of angering cable tv providers. Verizon may have an easier time acquiring content.
