In May, Twitter took major steps to improve security for users by finally making the jump to two-factor verification (and it’s no wonder, after AP and several other high-level accounts were hacked during the months of March and April). Now, Twitter is taking security one step further to improve mobile verification. But the process won’t depend on SMS.

One of the biggest complaints about the existing verification method, which relies on getting codes sent to your phone in the form of a text message, was that multiple accounts could not be managed under the same phone number. Not all carriers around the world supported the SMS verification system either. So rather than depending on text codes, Twitter has decided to keep their Android and iOS verification entirely within the app itself, through the combination of push notifications and approvals.

“Basically, Twitter users can verify their identities across multiple Twitter accounts through a backup code generated after turning on ‘Login Verification” in the app settings menu,’ says Rachel King at ZDNet. “After enrolling, users can go through the Twitter application to approve requests each time when signing in to Twitter.com with your username and password.”

This second feature is a huge upgrade because it allows you to detect wannabe hackers before they actually make it into your account to do any real damage.

The verification updates were announced along with several new mobile features, including a “View More Photos” option in search that displays a gallery of all images, and new iOS list management features.
