Ever heard of Tumblr? If you were born before 1985, there’s a good chance the answer to that question is no. While the Tumblr age demographic trends much lower than other social networks, with over half of all users are under age 25, Tumblr in fact a viable option for businesses looking for a blogging platform that connects to the social world.

Our friends over at Social Media Examiner point out:

“With more than 10 billion posts and 30 million blogs, Tumblr is quickly becoming a force in the world of social media. It combines the social sharing of Twitter and Facebook with a clean, easy-to-use blogging platform.”

Tumblr users are able to follow blogs, as well as create blog entries themselves. The defining characteristic on Tumblr, however, relates to frequent and fast-paced re-blogging (much like Facebook sharing, but with far more prevalence). This translates into the lightning fast spread of information. Because Tumblr is geared toward a younger corwd, blogs tend to be shorter and more visually intensive, with eye-catching imagery. This is important to keep in mind if you’re launching Tumblr for your business, in order to keep up with the style of the site itself and maintain/increase followers.

If you can handle the fast-paced, visual world of Tumblr, it’s easy-to-use interface makes it a great start-up blogging platform.  But as always, new users should always remember their audience. With a little bit of recommended exploration, Tumblr can be a great way for businesses and people to branch out into a new and exciting visual social media experience.
