When Instagram mimicked Snapchat last year, by introducing a Stories feature that looked exactly the same as the one Snapchat had been offering for years, the Facebook-owned social network got a lot of flak. But six months later, Instagram Stories – while they look just like Snapchat stories – serve a completely different function on social media.

Snapchat Stories are meant to amuse their audiences, but Instagram Stories are meant to stun them. Just as the original Instagram app was designed for amateur photographers trying to look professional, so too has the Instagram Stories feature become a way for users to present a more visually heightened version of their daily lives.
