Flip on your television during prime time hours any night of the week and you’ll likely encounter some type of reality competition series. Between The X Factor, American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, and America’s Got Talent, the casual viewer may see nothing special in NBC’s smash hit singing competition The Voice. Except for the fact that it’s leveraging social media in a way that no other reality show ever has.

During last night’s season finale alone, The Voice generated 250 trending topics, with 113 reaching worldwide status. The key to attaining those numbers? Everyone involved in the show — from contestants to coaches to couch potatoes — are actively involved on social networks. Finalists are even encouraged to stay in touch with their followers online, asking opinions and taking advice when it comes to song choice, wardrobe or hair decisions.

Not only that, but the sheer number of accounts associated with the show (a grand total of 216, up from 160 in Season 2) gives fans every opportunity to get and stay involved with their favorites. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 192 accounts from 64 artists on Twitter, Facebook and NBC.com blogs
  • 9 Facebook and Twitter accounts from coaches Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine, as well as host Carson Daly
  • 7 official The Voice accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, Google+ and YouTube
  • 4 accounts for Purrfect the Cat and Cee Lo’s Lady on Facebook and Twitter (not a joke)
  • 4 accounts for The Voice‘s social media correspondent Christina Milian: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr

Robert Hayes, EVP of Digital Media at NBC Entertainment, told Mashable: “This year, we expanded our social presence beyond Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram to also include Pinterest, Tumblr and Google+, as well as added second-screen implementations with Zeebox and The Voice Live app.”

And their social media campaign is proving successful. The show earned an Emmy nomination earlier this year for best reality competition series, which host Carson Daly directly attributes to the show’s social media efforts: “The social media response is one of the biggest reasons we were nominated for the Emmy. We’re not worried about what other shows are doing.”
