A week after LinkedIn’s issues with a hacker leaking user passwords on the internet, some wonder how much damage the security breach has caused. Other social networks have had privacy issues, but with LinkedIn being “the” business-oriented social network, will users be as forgiving of the lack of protection?

Computerworld weighs in on this question, pointing out that LinkedIn has failed to protect the one and only thing that it makes money off of — user data — and business users typically don’t take kindly to their personal information being left unsecured. Though social network users tend to be loyal and often put up with various privacy and security issues on other networks, such as Facebook.

Through postings on other social networks, some users have claimed that they are leaving, but LinkedIn reports that it’s going strong and number of users are growing. Even though the security issue was an egregious error, analysts believe that it won’t hurt LinkedIn much, as there is relatively no competition for them in the business-orinted social network world.

Are you a LinkedIn user? If so, has the security breach caused you to leave the business social network? If not, has it at least caused you to further secure your LinkedIn account? While we hope that no one’s accounts were compromised, we also hope that this was an eye opening experience and that social network users secure their accounts, and that social networks take the necessary precautions to protect their users.
