The Facebook News Feed redesign aims at providing more relevant information about friends and their “social” lives, regardless of the frequency with which they log in. So you as the user are in charge: ultimately deciding what information is most relevant to you by having the ability to change settings in new top story new drop down menus.

This personalization update also brings about an entirely new feature — the News Ticker. This will allow you to have a real time update of what your friends are doing on Facebook.  Some features of the News Ticker include expanding the view to see what people are doing, customizing who is seen in your news ticker and specifying the display size of the ticker and chat windows.

According Facebook engineering manager Mark Tonkelowitz, via CIO.com:

“The News Feed redesign is intended to help you keep up with people that matter to you … It’s heavily influenced by the new ‘smart lists’ introduced last week, as the redesigned news feed ‘predicts’ which stories will be important to you, and displays these first.”

One of the biggest questions that comes with these new features is how privacy settings are affected.  Facebook claims that no privacy settings have changed, but that if you comment on a public post, your comments are also public. Again, while you in the process of learning about all of these new Facebook features, it’s worthwhile to continue being vigilant about what you post.

While the redesign and new features are still a hot topic among Facebook users, we’re predicting that these new changes will help to keep people interested and engaged during their time spent on Facebook.
