There are plenty of video apps on the market, but Instagram is doing their best to take it to the next level.

The mostly photo-based media platform has released a new app called Hyperlapse, and it takes videos.  That’s pretty much it, aside from the ability to edit the film speed and some impressive video stabilization algorithms.

The big marketing angle here is that Hyperlapse is not trying to be a point-and-click video app- Instagram is attempting to put something out there that lets anyone take professional looking, beautiful videos.  They’ve succeeded to a degree, as most videos taken with the app look much better than videos taken with others.  So, can Instagram monopolize the video app scene like they did with photo apps?  As long as they use Hyperlapse as a stepping stone and don’t stagnate, I think so.
