The internet is a remarkable place, but it goes without saying that some of the content can be irritating or tiring. A large portion of this annoying content on the internet is linked to bots. Twitterbots, spambots, hacker bots, botnets, download bots, the list goes on. A bot is a type of software application that is usually designed for one task, such as collecting email addresses for spam purposes, spreading ads and pop-ups, creating zombie computers, and creating fake addresses to trick surfers.
Security and cloud service provider Incapsula evaluated 1.45 billion page views from 20,000 sites over 90 days, and the results (which included traffic from almost 250 countries by IP address) revealed a surprising number or non-human clicks. The study showed that more than 60 percent of internet traffic is strictly computer generated, compared to less than 40 percent of traffic originating from individual web users.
