Ever wanted to view a news story from more than one angle? Just last week, Snapchat introduced Story Explorer, a feature that allows its users to do just that.

Before Story Explorer, users participated in Snapchat “story of the day” extravaganzas by taking videos and submitting them to the company. Snapchat employees then chose the best videos and posted them to the 24 hour city story. For example, in the Athens story several weeks ago, a Snapchat user could see what was going on at the Parthenon, in the Agora, or in busy downtown Athens by simply going to Athens story in Snapchat’s temporary icons and clicking though all the moments.

Story Explorer aims to expand upon individual moments within these live stories. Now, by simply swiping on a particular moment, a user can see that same moment from a wide variety of angles. For instance, if a user did not like the shot of a touchdown posted to the Snapchat story, now he can swipe and see it from ten different perspectives. Then, by swiping down, the user can return to the original story stream.

This new function is a part of the Snapchat’s efforts to expand its users’ abilities to share their lives with the world. Although relatively new among social media providers, Snapchat has grown quickly. The company reports over six billion video views daily. Snapchat hopes increasing the amount of available footage will make that number go even higher.

More users means more videos. And more videos mean more potential ad-time. Ads are Snapchat’s primary source of revenue, so the company desperately needs continual growth in that respect for survival.
