Snapchat has been under fire pretty much since day one, from accusations of falsely advertising security, keeping photos when they should be deleted, and just plain unsavory-ness.

This has unsurprisingly escalated with the celebrity leaked photos last month, causing everyone to question if and where photos were safe.

Now, the (supposedly) same people behind the stolen celebrity photos are boasting that they have 200,000 photos of ordinary Snapchat users, and have uploaded some onto various internet sites.  The important thing to realize here, however, is that the photos were taken from a third party website called Snapsaved.com, that was offering desktop use of the popular app, allowing users to use something other than their phone to send and receive pictures.  The website seems to have saved user login info, and saving pictures sent using the service, which is seemingly explained in the name “SnapSaved.”

According to 4chan and Reddit users, only 13GB of Snapchat pictures have been uploaded, but mostly low-quality and mundane, rather than the sexually explicit photos that were promised.  This is much, much less than 20,000, and apparently only 100MB were nude photos.

This story appears to just be a matter of foolish users giving personal information to a strange website, rather than a mistake on Snapchats end.  The service said in a statement: We can confirm that Snapchat’s servers were never breached and were not the source of these leaks. Snapchatters were victimised by their use of third party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we explicitly prohibit in our terms of use precisely because they compromise our users’ security.”
