To help promote the new Italian spinoff of its “Citadel” television series, Amazon Prime Video recently hired an unlikely group of people: little old ladies.

“Anyone could be a spy. Even a Granny.”

Featuring Italian actress Matilda De Angelis, “Citadel: Diana” tells the story of a “civilian turned into a spy.” Inspired by this concept, Prime Video partnered with a team of four Italian grandmas to take to the streets, er… balconies – of Italy during Europe’s most popular comic festival. Over the course of the five-day event, Maria, Lucia, Rosa, and Anna were placed on balconies around the city that had been transformed into “mock espionage headquarters” and tasked with “spying” on and interacting with passers-by.

In addition to providing the women with clear views of the surrounding areas, the balconies also served as billboards with information about the new show, as well as messages such as “Espionage is a tradition,” “Anyone could be a spy,” and “Spies never retire.” From their respective posts, the women engaged with hundreds of the over 800,000 visitors in attendance, garnering much attention and even on occasion handing out food to interest people in the series.
