Football season is upon us! And you may be surprised to learn that 41% of fans say they would rather watch a game at home than wildly cheering in a stadium. Why? Home offers a little bit of everything: friends, family, of course the fact that it's more cost effective and you don't have to endure freezing temperatures in mid-November. But mostly, it's because home also offers America's favorite leisure activity: browsing the internet.

The New England Patriots are breaking new ground by offering stadium-wide Wi-Fi at Gillette Stadium for the upcoming 2013-14 season to give fans a more connected experience. The network will have 360 access points and enough bandwidth to handle up to 16,000 concurrent users.

But here's the coolest part: the Patriots have developed a mobile app, Patriots Game Day Live, which will provide a live play-by-play of the game, bathroom wait times, an option to order concessions, as well as NFL Red Zone to check scores from other games that are happening at the same time.

“We are trying to give things here that you can’t get in your living room,” says Patriots VP of content. Eventually, Kirsch says the franchise would like to add features such as audio from mic'd up players on the field or video from the sidelines and locker room.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is enthusiastic about the idea, saying every NFL stadium should have high-speed Wi-Fi for fans. We agree! Would you be more likely to buy pricey NFL tickets if free Wi-Fi were offered at the stadium?
