The constant stream of new community-based apps sometimes seems endless, and only a fraction of them actually take flight after the initial flash of popularity. It’s our duty to report on the biggest up-and-comers, or just the most interesting of the lot, so here’s another that caught our eye!

Roadie is a shipping service that provides users with a cheap way to send their items to a more challenging location. It works by matching up drivers headed in the general direction of the delivery and stringing those routes together, while offering the drivers a little monetary incentive.

Since there is already a massive network of people traveling across the country at all times, why not tap into it? The service works especially well for bigger items that FedEx or UPS would charge more to ship, or to get something faster without necessarily paying for expedited shipping.

The company selects its drivers based on their license, insurance, and driving history, charging an amount respective to the size and distance of the delivery.

Roadie has been live since January and has already seen a giant spike in app downloads this past month.
