If you're the owner of an iPhone or iPad, get ready for a big iOS update prompt tomorrow morning.

iOS 7 is already being called Apple's most important product update ever. Why? Because it's so drastically different from every other iteration of Apple's mobile operating system.

Apple is taking a risk with iOS 7, because the changes aren't just based on looks and design, but functionality. You may recall that Apple's long-time Vice President of iOS Software, Scott Forstall, left the company earlier this year, being replaced by lead creative designer Jony Ive. And the transition wasn't pretty.

But Ive is well-known in the industry for his design talent, having brought us the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPad mini, MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro with Retina display. Ive took control of all hardware and software interfaces in his new role as Human Interface leader and is credited with moving away from skeuomorphic design details and adopting a more modern, flat design for iOS 7.

“Unlike the iPhone itself, iOS has recently felt stodgy and stale next to Android and Windows Phone,” writes Brian Barrett of Gizmodo. “It's iOS 7 that will convince people to buy iPhones for the next several years, and it's iOS 7 that will turn millions of unsuspecting current iPhone owners' devices into entirely different phones.”

Three of the most important tips you'll need to remember when it comes to iOS 7 navigation are:

  • Control Center (swipe up from the bottom): The Control Center includes most commonly used settings, like screen brightness, Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, and Orientation. It also includes settings for the calculator, camera, and music apps,
  • Notification Center (swipe down from the top): Provides a quick view of your daily events, including the weather, along with an option to view missed notifications from all apps since you checked your phone last
  • Spotlight Search (swipe down from anywhere below the top status bar): Allows you to search for specifics emails, contacts, and apps. One change here is that you can no long use spotlight to search the web–only your phone.
