What started as a Kickstarter project of Pebble Technology looking to raise $100,000 to launch a “smart” watch, has turned into a multimillion dollar project, as investors have come from everywhere looking to help fund and secure their own Pebble.

So what exactly is Pebble? From their Kickstarter page:

Pebble is the first watch built for the 21st century. It’s infinitely customizable, with beautiful downloadable watchfaces and useful internet-connected apps. Pebble connects to iPhone and Android smartphones using Bluetooth, alerting you with a silent vibration to incoming calls, emails and messages. While designing Pebble, we strove to create a minimalist yet fashionable product that seamlessly blends into everyday life.

What Pebble Technology seems to be doing with Pebble is integrating your watch into the rest of your technological world, which makes a lot of sense. With a watch like the Pebble, you would no longer have to dig into your pocket for your phone every time it vibrates or alerts you with a notification of a new text, email, or call. All you would have to is look at your wrist and know if it’s something worth checking or if it can wait. It also integrates with apps to play music, to track your exercise/running patterns, and can eve be a golf rangefinder.

Since Pebble Technology has far exceeded the needed funds, the watch will definitely see production, with anticipated delivery around September of this year. Also, with such an outpouring of support they’ve already made some upgrades, like making the phone waterproof, which is a nice step in increasing the watch’s day to day functionality.

A device like this has been a long time coming, and is in dire need. There have been others like it, (Pebble Technology’s own inPlse watch and the WIMM One) but they either lacked the functionality, appearance, or durability. After all, it’s still a watch, so it needs to survive daily activities while also being a bridge to your mobile world.

Does the Pebble intrigue you? Do you think you would use such a device? If so, check out its Kickstarter page and look into becoming an investment backer. If you’re not exactly sold on it yet, you can always wait until production units are available at resellers.
