If you're still not annoyed by over-hashtagged posts on your social feeds, get ready! Facebook will officially be incorporating hashtags, one of Twitter's (in)famously iconic features, mostly because everybody uses them anyway. Even if it's just to poke fun at people who are use them legitimately.
Here's how it will work: By clicking a hashtag within a post, you'll be redirected to all posts from friends and pages that have recently hashtagged that particular topic or event. This will allow Facebook to get in on “real-time public conversations” and also allow users to discover trending topics of the day/week, a la its rival Twitter.
“To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what's happening or what people are talking about,” writes Facebook product manager Greg Lindley. “Hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations.”
Of course, the Facebook hashtags announcement is great news for marketers. Now companies can reach entirely new audiences by having people adopt their brand hashtag or that of a specific campaign. “If marketers are already using hashtags as part of their marketing on other sites, they will be able to use those same hashtags within Facebook and drive engagement within the Facebook environment,” says eMarketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson.
What's your opinion: Do hashtags belong on Facebook?
