Facebook notoriously tracks their users and has attempted multiple studies using their social media platform. They keep track of names, friends, interests, and likes. According to them, it is an attempt to customize ads and suggestions for the individual user, making the Facebook experience one of a kind. However, recent studies have shown that Facebook might know much more than we realized.
They accomplish this through tracking cookies, which are fully functional even when logged out of the application. Furthermore, they are able to use these tracking cookies for people who are not even Facebook members. USA Today covers exactly how they do this:
The tracking process begins when you initially visit a facebook.com page. If you choose to sign up for a new account, Facebook inserts two different types of tracking cookies in your browser, a “session cookie” and a “browser cookie.” If you choose not to become a member, and move on, you only get the browser cookie.
After accessing the Facebook site, and receiving either one or multiple tracking cookies, you are officially on the grid. Every time you visit any website, Facebook has full access to the information. Not to mention that they monitor your computer itself, including settings and system.
But what information is Facebook actually able to glean from web searches and your computer screen resolution? Obviously they will be able to find information from your Facebook profile, as well as web history. But is there really much more they can figure out?

It’s a bit concerning to be sure. More so that we have no idea where said information is going at the moment. The latest word on this has been from Facebook engineering director Arturo Bejar, who has assured us it is merely used to enhance our user experience. So far, so good, but we shall see.
