Facebook’s latest development in social media involves music. The company has made it possible to share songs directly from the streaming service, Spotify, via its messenger app.

Spotify already had a “share” function before Facebook came along, but it was clunky, and often required users to cut and paste a link or simply screenshot the song they were listening to and send it to a friend through a text message. The results were often haphazard and many people felt inconvenienced when trying to share music with each other.

Facebook’s integration does away with all that. Now any Facebook user can send a song or even playlist from Spotify simply by clicking an album cover in Spotify and clicking the share to Facebook function. Then he can send the song in the messenger app. Once the receiver clicks on the picture, he will immediately be sent to Spotify, where he can stream the song without any delays.

Facebook’s innovation could pose a more serious competition to Apple Music, as well as draw more people to Spotify, which has over 80 million users at this point. If all succeeds, Facebook could not only enable greater variety of conversation about music, but also use its partnership with Spotify to make more money in the future.
