After four years, Facebook has decided to eliminate the Trending News feature. The company stated that the feature will be removed this week, and will be replaced with fresh news options.

Facebook cited dwindling use of the feature, with most users turning to mobile and video for their news. Facebook’s Head of News Product, Alex Hardiman said in a statement last Friday:

We introduced Trending in 2014 as a way to help people discover news topics that were popular across the Facebook community. However, it was only available in five countries and accounted for less than 1.5 percent of clicks to news publishers on average. From research we found that over time people found the product to be less and less useful. We will remove Trending from Facebook next week and we will also remove products and third-party partner integrations that rely on the Trends API.

Instead, Facebook will be focusing on alternative ways to provide users with news, including adding a “breaking news label” to posts, testing a new feature called “Today In,” and a new video platform “Facebook Web.” Today In is a locally-focused news feature that will show content based on a user’s city, and include updates from local officials and jurisdictions. Facebook Web is bigger in scope. Focusing on video content, it will have live coverage, daily news briefings, and weekly recaps.

Hopefully, these new features will be more helpful then Trending News for users searching for relevant news. What do you think? Do you ever use Trending News feature and will you miss it?
