The EU Parliament is under media scrutiny for what appears to be word-for-word copies of documents supplied by American companies.  The lobbying effort by American interests into EU politics is being described as very intense.

Here is an example of the proposed language for the online privacy law:

“Every natural person shall have the right not to be subject to a measure which produces legal effects concerning this natural person or significantly affects this natural person, and which is based solely on automated processing intended to evaluate certain personal aspects relating to this natural person or to analyse or predict in particular the natural person’s performance at work, economic situation, location, health, personal preferences, reliability or behaviour.”

And here is what the language looks like after U.S. interests were allowed to influence the Parliament:

“A data subject shall not be subject to a decision which is unfair or discriminatory, and which is based solely on automated processing intended to evaluate certain personal aspects relating to this data subject.”

CIO’s Constantine von Hoffman points out an interesting aspect of the changed language.  “Natural person” has been changed to “data subject”.  If that language doesn’t sound like corporate interference, then we don’t know what does.  Europe Versus Facebook spokesman Max Schrems says: “In a nutshell: The IT industry is about to kill our fundamental right to data protection and privacy and some parliamentarians apparently do not even notice when assisting them.”
