It was bound to happen… Instagram has officially announced that it will start putting ads into our feeds. #notcool

Next week will mark the 3-year anniversary since Instagram's 2010 launch. And given the app's popularity during that time, it's a wonder that ads weren't featured long before now. But according to Instagram, the company is looking ahead to “build itself into a sustainable business,” which means ads will start occasionally appearing in the feeds of U.S. users over the next few months.

The goal of Instagram's ad campaign is to feature brands targeted toward the user based on what he or she already follows. And given the fact that it's Instagram, the overall look of the ads will be very different from those seen on other social networks. The focus is to give viewers beautiful, high-quality photos and videos from top brands on Instagram.

From an end-user standpoint, you may actually enjoy seeing Instagram picture and video ads because they'll be more engaging and fit seamlessly with the visual aspect of the platform. Not only that, but users will have the option to hide and even report ads they don't like. So essentially, your Instagram ads will be as customizable as your individual feed. And Instagram does make it a point to clarify that you'll still own 100% of your photos and videos. The ad campaign will not change this.

As for brands, many have been using Instagram as a promotional tool for years. But since Instagram is free, they still need to earn revenue if they want to stay operational So this will also be a great way for brands to expand their advertising efforts

What do you think: what type of ad would catch an Instagram user's attention?
