A new holographic phone will soon be available for tech fans. Created by RED, a company that makes digital cinema cameras for Hollywood, the Hydrogen One phone will have a screen that can switch from 2D to 3D content– no funny glasses needed.

The phone will be available through AT&T and Verizon, who will simultaneously be launching a content platform called the Hydrogen Network, designed for videos taken with the phone’s fancy 4-view camera, as well as movies, music, and games in 3D format.

Brian Higgins, vice president of device and consumer product marketing at Verizon says of the phone:

RED Hydrogen One was designed with cutting-edge technology that simply can’t be described – you have to hold it in your hands and experience it yourself to understand why this is such a mobile game changer. A phone like this deserves the best network in the country, which is why we can’t wait to bring it to Verizon customers later this year.

Phones with 3D capabilities have been attempted in the past, but so far, none have caught on.

Available in August, Hydrogen One is a true bleeding edge technology – the $1,300 price tag will probably be prohibitive to the average Joe, though early adopters may just jump at the chance to experience the first holographic smartphone. We’ll see if it’s good as the hype. What do you think?
