When the Super Bowl rolled around, Planter’s Mr. Peanut mascot went for a wild ride. In an advertising stunt that stunned viewers across the globe, we watched as Mr. Peanut died a tragic death at the ripe old age of 104 and was promptly raised to life again in a new form as Baby Peanut.

Oh, and we also found out that apparently, this whole time he was actually named Mr. Bartholomew Richard Fitzgerald-Smythe, which was exciting.

Now, all that seems like quite a lot for one year. Especially for a 104-year-old legume personage, you might say.

But Mr. Peanut had even more tricks up his sleeve. It was all very confusing for us, you know, to track with the whole death and resurrection thing – not to mention the fact that he was 104 years old and yet a baby simultaneously – but things could still get more confusing. We just didn’t know it yet.

In a recently released ad segment, Baby Peanut is shown in a somewhat more mature manifestation, marked by a jaunty baseball cap and a knowing grin that quirks to the side conspiratorially. You know how we were just coming to terms with 104-year-old Mr. Peanut being a baby? Well evidently, Baby Peanut, who was 104 years old, is now a 21-year-old known as Peanut Jr.

First of all, this raises all sorts of metaphysical questions for us – namely, how in heaven’s name this Peanut is truly Mr. Peanut reborn if he is in fact Peanut Jr. – a title which implies he is in fact the son of and not the same as Mr. Peanut himself. Or perhaps they are all distinct persons yet simultaneously one Mr. Peanut – the Planter’s own Trinutty?

January 22 – Mr. Peanut Dies

Mr. Peanut goes for a wild ride in his peanut mobile with his two friends and drives it straight off the cliff. While the three manage to grab onto a branch before falling to their deaths, there isn’t enough room for the three of them – and Mr. Peanut nobly sacrifices himself, falling to his death in a sudden explosion as he collides with the peanut-mobile.

February 2 – Mr. Peanut’s Funeral and Rebirth

A funeral is held for Mr. Peanut, as notable onlookers including Mr. Clean and Kool-Aid Man lament his passing. Mr. Kool-Aid’s grief overflows into a shower of tears, which water Mr. Peanut’s grave, and lo! The sun shines e’er the brighter, a plant springs forth from the soil, and BAM! Baby Peanut emerges, birthed anew from the tears of a sugary drink mascot. Oh, and he speaks Dolphin first thing, because that’s really clever. Ha. Ha.

May 15 Kool-Aid Man Has a Zoom Call with Baby Peanut

You know what is less exciting than a meandering conversation between a peanut and a pitcher of punch? That conversation over a fake zoom call.

But hey, if a prepubescent peanut in a top hat told us to stay home, we guess we better do it…

August 11 – Baby Peanut Becomes Peanut Jr.

Thanks to what a Planter’s spokesperson calls a “magical growth spurt,” Baby Peanut has now transformed into 21-year old Mr. Peanut Jr., and he’s ready to celebrate at the bar. Flashing his ID, which bears the DOB: “COMPLICATED,” Mr. Peanut is questioned about his mysterious origins.

There is an undeniable upside, though – Mr. Peanut Jr.’s birthday sweepstakes gives those celebrating quarantine birthdays the chance to win $2,100 in prize money.
