When it comes to social media, strategy is everything: when you post, with whom you share, and how you share are all crucial decisions. Sometimes though, the rubrics of different social networks stymie our marketing ability.
While we can’t always get what we want, there are some handy tricks and tips for getting around some of the irksome or less than favorable features of social media sites. Although there are a plethora of other hacks for you to explore, check out these 5 we have curated from across the web, and our own experiences:
Beat That 140-Character Limit
Although the rumors are flying that Twitter might increase its character limit exponentially, that has yet to happen. So what do you do, when you have a quote, thought, or message that you know will change lives, but you can only get it down to 141 characters?
Before you tear your hair out changing all the “ands” to “&s” and contracting like you know you shouldn’t but gotta, try this:
Type your message out, and then using Photoshop or another photo service, slap your message over an eye-catching image. You can then “tweet” the photo, and you will most likely catch your followers’ eyes with the image. A win-win.
Don’t Be Caught Stalking on LinkedIn
Want to see what people are up to, but don’t really want them to know you are looking at their profile? Then go “totally anonymous.”
Login to your LinkedIn account, and go to “Privacy & Settings,” which you can access by hovering over your profile picture on the upper right corner of the page. From there, click on “Privacy Controls” and hit “Select what others see when you’ve viewed their profile.”
You will be given variable options of “visibility” on LinkedIn when you view others’ profiles. You can stay visible, semi-anonymous, or totally anonymous. The choice is up to you.
Share Selectively
We all have heard of horror sharing stories on Facebook: that drunken mugshot you accidentally shared with your boss, that mistake of a tattoo your grandmother found in her updates, or THAT photo you wish you could forget, but it is still a hot topic at work.
While you can’t retroactively erase people’s memories (at least not legally) you do have the option to share more selectively going forward.
When sharing something, hit the drop-down “Friends” button, and then “More Options.” This gives you the fantastic option to share with specific connections, or specifically “don’t share” with friends. While nothing is as foolproof as not sharing at all, it sure doesn’t hurt to know that you can be more circumspect when sharing.
Tweak Retweets For More Visibility
Even though it is so nice, easy, and convenient to hit that retweet button, it really doesn’t give you as much visibility as you might think. But don’t panic: instead of only hitting that button, try simply adding “RT @So-and-So” and then insert their original message. They get a RT, but your Twitter profile gets a little more visibility.
Save Those Updates For Later
While we all are bombarded with Facebook posts, some articles and links actually can be interesting, maybe enough helpful — too bad we don’t have the time to drop everything and read them when we get them. But how about later?
Facebook gives you the option to “Save for later” links and events that might want to check out, when you have the time. So next time, instead of opening the link in a new tab and forgetting about it until you realize you have 600 tabs open, hit the upper right drop down arrow, and select “Save for Later.”
