In the wake of Facebook’s controversial acquisition of the Oculus Rift virtual reality system, news has been trickling out about what the social platform’s next steps into the VR world would be.
The most obvious opportunity for Facebook is to create virtual reality versions of its popular apps, which is exactly what Chris Cox, the company’s head of product, announced at a media conference in California yesterday. Unfortunately, he was unable to give specific details on which apps, describing instead a vision where users are able to share their full environment with others. One can imagine a whole new way to chat, or maybe the ability to “project” themselves into other’s surroundings, which all seems very sci-fi.
This is an exciting concept, but there won’t be any concrete examples for some time, especially since virtual reality is itself in infancy. “We’re a long way away from everyone having those headsets,” Cox said.
Facebook definitely seems to be taking this new technology seriously, and it will certainly be exciting to see what they have in store for the future. How do you envision Facebook’s coming changes? Tweet your thoughts to @OPUSfidelis!
