You've probably been hearing a lot about the new cultural phenomenon gone viral — “The Harlem Shake”. The dance craze has exploded across the internet this week after millions began uploading videos of themselves doing the Harlem Shake, in a variety of hilarious situations, set to music producer Baauer's 2012 song by the same title.
What you may not know is that the Harlem Shake has actually been around longer than most of the people appearing in these videos. It was originally an urban dance move that emerged from Harlem, NY in the early 1980s, but the 2013 remix is being brought into college dorms, offices, even underwater.
12,000 Harlem Shake videos had been uploaded as of Monday and have already been viewed over 44 million times! It may be tough to top Gangnam's Style's worldwide internet fame — and 1.3 billion views on YouTube — but the Harlem Shake is just beginning to gain ground. Expect these videos to start blowing up your social feeds over the next few weeks.
