With social media sites becoming more and more open, with tighter and tighter identity controls, it should be no surprise that there are many sites moving in the exact opposite direction.

Sites like Post Secret, Scrt.ly, and Whisper all allow users to post secrets and images truly anonymously — no details are asked for or made available, no one moderating the boards knows that you left a secret, etc. The results have been mostly positive (it can be therapeutic to share secrets), but there has also been some backlash (Post Secret was shut down at one point, allegedly due to bullying through the use of the app).

What can we say about them?

We can say that these sites do not generate revenue. None offer information useful to advertisers, or space for ads. They are, however, beautiful sites, and we hope that they do not go away. The web needs an area for free expression that is not necessarily tied to a profit-making platform. That was, after all, what the web was created for in the very beginning.
