Mozilla announced this morning that it will be releasing the first ever Firefox smartphones tomorrow in Spain. The phones — Alcatel One Touch Fire and ZTE Open — will run on Firefox' Operating System, with Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica being the first carriers to offer them.

According to Mozilla CEO Jay Sullivan, “Firefox OS powers the first smartphones built entirely on Web technologies and will stimulate an inspiring new wave of innovation for the Web.” Firefox OS was built using HTML5 and other open Web standards, so it may offer a better option for developers who are looking for a viable, adaptable alternative mobile platform with fewer rules and restrictions. “One of our recent surveys found Firefox OS to be more compelling to developers over Tizen, Blackberry and Kindle Fire, despite no commercial products being available yet. It is clear that influential members of the operator, OEM, and developer communities at both global and hyper-local levels see the potential of Mozilla’s Firefox OS to be that next platform.”

At €69 ($90), the ZTE Open is also a cheaper option than the average iOS or Android smartphone. It comes with a 3.5-inch screen, 1GHz processor from Qualcomm, a 3.2-megapixel camera and support for Wi-Fi and A-GPS. The ZTE also offers 512MB of integrated storage and 256MB of RAM. Beyond the basics, a new feature is also being promoted to help entice mobile users: dynamic app search, which elimiates the need for app stores by searching for apps and pages on the web itself. Given that these smartphones are designed by Mozilla, it makes sense that you can expect a personalized, more browser-based mobile experience.

The mobile market is currently dominated by Apple and Google, so it's exciting to see an entirely new mobile operating system enter into it. Would you purchase a Firefox phone?
