Infographics are an ever-present image type on the internet these days.  An infographic is just what it sounds like: a visual image such as chart or diagram used to represent information or data, which is usually presented as a combination of memorable text and appealing imagery laid out in an easy-to-understand fashion.   This easy-to-digest presentation of information is what makes them so prevalent.

There are two core pillars to infographic success: great design and successful promotion and marketing. But let’s break it down a little further.  In order to achieve internet fame or whatever else you may be seeking with your infographic, you need people to see it, obviously.  In order to get these coveted views, you should adhere to the following 7 tips.

1. Story

The story should involve your target audience in some way, because it has to interest them. Pay attention to what the content, or ‘info’ of the graphic is trying to say, because if that falls on deaf ears, your completed infographic will fare poorly.

2. Style

Style may be subjective but a good designer will know that he has to appeal to the viewer.  It is important that the information and layout be hierarchical and digestible. Less can often be more.

3. Simplicity

Minimalism is an art form that reduces any extraneous design, such as font types, image styles, and layout.  It helps avoid confusion or overstimulation by focusing only on the important information, which is good, it’s best not to confuse your audience.

4. Size

Optimizing for size simply means considering the number of pixels and file size. You don’t want the infographic to take a long time to open or download, or have the viewer scroll forever to reach the end.  For best results, aim towards creating an infographic that is 1,500 to 2,000 pixels in length and 735 pixels wide.

5. Statistics

Infographics are perfect for stats. You can easily show impact and growth, all you need to do is make sure they are accurate, reliable, and up-to-date.  Also, make sure you are giving out helpful and relevantinformation.

6. Shareability

Make it easy to share by providing an embed code. Let popular influencers know about your new graphic so that it is shared by fans on their own social networks.

7. Source

Always make sure you give credit to the main source of the information. Your audience needs to know the information is credible, and it’s also just the polite thing to do.
