Google announced today that is is buying Nest to the tune of $3.2 billion in cash. For those of you who aren't familiar with Nest or what it does, Nest has spent the last few years transforming normal household staples like HVAC thermostats and smoke detectors into high-tech “smart” products that learn and adapt in order to save customers money and potentially save lives.

With this purchase, it looks as if Google is continuing its pursuit to integrate itself even more seamlessly into people's lives.

Late last year, Google was rumored to be testing a thermostat similar to Nest, but at the time there was no mention of a hardware partner. Home automation is still relatively new, as the hardware is still expensive and a luxury for most consumers. However, with Google's financial backing and vast resources, Nest should be able to bring home automation to the masses.

According to Nest CEO Tony Fadell:

“We're thrilled to join Google. With their support, Nest will be even better placed to build simple, thoughtful devices that make life easier at home, and that have a positive impact on the world.”

Nest will continue to operate under the leadership of Fadell with its own distinct brand identity. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals in the US, and is expected to close in the next few months. Tony has also written a great post on Nest's blog detailing what this acquisition means to their company and customers.

It looks like Google is getting in at the ground floor with a company that is a true innovator in the “smart” household products market. One thing that should put current customers at ease is that Nest remains devoted to keeping their customers' data private, as seen here. Yes, you can step back from the ledge now. Just because Google is purchasing the company doesn't mean your data or future customers' data will be opened up for all to see.

Overall this looks like a win for both companies. Nest will now have “limitless” resources and support to continue their mission and Google will continue backing companies that they believe are changing people's lives for the better. We can't wait to see what this partnership can bring forth.
