An Infographic by Online Psychology Degree demonstrates how our relationship with gadgets and technology is effecting the way people sleep, and also effecting our health.  How is your technology use affecting you? Using your mobile devices before bed can have some pretty serious consequences.

95% of those surveyed said they use an electronic device within an hour before they go to bed.  Many people may not be aware that 2 hours of light from an electronic display actually decreases melatonin levels (the chemical in the brain that makes you sleepy) by 22%. It’s no surprise then that 63% of those surveyed said their sleep needs were not being met.

9 out of 10 people between the ages of 18 and 29 actually sleep with their phone and 5 out of 10 will check their phone immediately if they wake up in the middle of the night. Sound familiar?

Our addiction to mobile devices is certainly growing with no end in sight, but like most addictions there can be drastic health consequences with a lack of moderation.  Sleeping less than 6 hours a night increases heart attack risk by 50%, and those who do late night computing are more susceptible to stress and depression.

In the digital era, instant access to information may make or break careers, but don’t let it to break good sleeping habits. With 3 in 10 employees falling asleep at their desk this month, remember that you can’t improve your career by getting fired.  So do yourself a favor and take a digital break before bed.

The internet will still be there in the morning.
