Anyone who spends any amount of time on the internet is bound to know Amazon.com.  The online retailer sells almost anything you could think of, and just last year reached sales of 61 billion dollars, which exceeds nearly every other online store by about 50 billion.  In addition, Amazon’s beloved Prime service, which grants unlimited free two-day shipping on select items as well as unlimited streaming of thousands of TV shows and movies, boasts an estimated 10 million subscribers.

Now, Amazon stands ready to completely revolutionize the entire industry.  A surprising announcement last Sunday unveiled the electronic commerce giant’s newest feature – an option to have your packages delivered by unmanned drones.  To raise the stakes even higher, Amazon claims that when this distribution method debuts in 2015, it will be 30 minutes from click to arrival.

If these drones fulfill the public and Amazon’s expectations, it will change some serious standards including internet use and aviation regulations.  But in order to launch the drone system, Amazon has to meet the FAA’s strict policies about interactions with other aircraft, not to mention the public’s anxieties regarding privacy.  This is too grand and futuristic a change to be ignored forever, and although it will probably take a little longer than 2015, we can definitely expect drones at our doorsteps within the next 5 years.
