Throughout the last week, you’re bound to have seen at least one tweet or Facebook share linking to the video entitled “Kony 2012”. This video has spread like wildfire on social media networks, which helped it garner over 100 million views in 6 days! According to video performance analysis company Visible Measure:

It’s hard to understand how big 100 million views is, not to mention the unprecedented speed with which Kony has surpassed the milestone.

Comparing this with other high profile viral videos, Visible Measure demonstrates just how quickly Kony 2012 took off. While the original video has 74 million views on YouTube, it has actually spawned over 750 video responses that received an additional 38 million views on their own.

As other sources such as Mashable have reported, the video is also drawing criticism of the organization Invisible Children, also the creator of the 29-minute video. Numerous sources, such as Kony 2012, Viewed Critically point out discrepancies in Invisible Children’s management and how it spends the donations it is receiving. And still others sources criticize Invisible Children’s portrayal of Joseph Kony, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the entire situation in Uganda.

No matter which side you favor when it comes to Kony 2012, it has still become the most viral video in internet history and awareness has increased exponentially through the use of social media networks like Facebook and Twitter. Amazingly, the video also broke from common online video rules:

According to Engelman, the rule of thumb with online video is that people stop watching after two minutes. But that rule “has been proven wrong this week.”

So were you one of the millions who watched and shared Kony 2012 via social media?
