It took a long time, but Facebook has finally recognized the important presence of nonprofits on social media. To facilitate online giving Facebook has created a “donate now” button that can be placed on nonprofit pages.

But has Facebook really done enough to help out small nonprofits?

Facebook’s “donate now” button comes in a transitional time for the social media giant. The company has recently changed its algorithm which reduces the amount of viral traffic a nonprofit will achieve, making it a lot harder for smaller nonprofits to gain followers and donations. Thus, only large organizations that can afford to pay for advertisements that direct people to the Facebook page can really benefit from the “donate now” button.

What if your nonprofit doesn’t have a large advertising budget to overcome the algorithm changes? Fear not. The “donate now” button is certainly a step in the right direction for nonprofits on Facebook and will certainly help direct people to donate if they visit your page. Hopefully one day Facebook will be even friendlier toward the needs of charitable organizations. Until then, keep posting eye-catching content and constantly keep up with your supporters!
